Vendor study examines social networking to reveal the most-used terms in IT of 2009
Information Management Online, December 21, 2009
December 21, 2009 – The top three technology buzzwords of CIOs and CTOs in the last year are Web 2.0, cloud computing and virtual desktop, according to Logicalis, a U.K.-based provider of information and communication technology services. Derived from studying technology sites and conversations on social media outlets, the company offers this reference list to help businesses plan for areas of focus in 2010.
Top 10 Technology Buzzwords of 2009
1. Web 2.0 allows companies to support two-way information sharing, interactivity and a deeper relationship with customers.
2. Cloud computing helps make IT costs predictable, flexible and scalable.
3. Virtual desktops can lower costs and decrease the time it takes to manage a large number of dispersed desktops, while increasing security.
4. Social media can be leveraged for competitive advantage, and requires some level of governance in an area that crosses the line between personal and work life.
5. Security remains a top topic of conversation, as it is still essential.
6. Google entered the arena of Web-based applications, browsing and cloud offerings.
7. Microsoft and Windows 7 was buzzworthy with reviews and user experiences to in-depth testing and analysis.
8. Government 2.0 is helping politicians realize the power of Web-based opinion, and quickly drive campaigns and initiatives to a broad audience.
9. Twitter enables many respected IT leaders to quickly share perspectives.
10. iPhone and other mobile devices are impacting the enterprise in terms of support, security and viruses.
This information can be used to address customers’ needs, as well as to prepare IT for what areas organizations will be looking at expanding into next year.
“Many of these terms should already be quite familiar,” said Lisa Dreher, vice president, marketing for Logicalis in the research release. “We hope to establish an understanding of how these buzzwords are establishing new or extending existing trends in the information technology industry.”

Facebook Drops The Hottest Status Trends – You Are Not Going To Like The First Two
by Jesse Hess on Dec.21, 2009, under News
Facebook, the world-crushing social network, has just released some absolutely amazing data harvested from tracking (anonymously), millions of Facebook status updates throughout the year.
Dubbed Facebook “Memeology,” Facebook is trying to track changes in what people are talking about over time. Think of it like Twitter Trends, just not as spammed, short lived, or dull.
Facebook of course has access to more data about the global population than can be reckoned, and so this data is well sourced, sampled, and accurate. And that is what makes it so sad. To snap the suspense, here are the top status trends of 2009, we will break them down after the jump:

The largest trend, Facebook Applications stems from an insidious practice of Zynga taking over the status of most of your friends. Facebook said it well: “You could almost say that 2009 was the year of the farm in status updates.” You know what that means, Farmville.
Gag me with a towel. Farmville, if you listen to the TNW podcast you know is a hated contagion. But that does segway into the second top trending meme: FML.
If people wanted to prove that opening Facebook past the top 20 universities in the US changed the IQ spread a touch, this should clinch it. The top two trending memes were: I play a spammy farm game online, and I hate my life.
The list has a few things to be expected, Twitter was a big deal this year, as was Lady Gaga. Facebook changed the way that you update your status, so that the use of the personal pronoun makes sense.
And of course, this has been the year of the bucket-kicking celebrity, so to see that in its slot is perfectly reasonable. Facebook has a few pretty graphs if you are into that sort of thing.

Apple iPod Nano (fifth generation, 8GB, green) MP3 player reviews – CNET Reviews

The good: Packed to the gills with new audio-video features such as a video camera, FM radio, voice recording, Genius Mixes, a built-in speaker, and a larger 2.2-inch screen; also gets a pedometer.
The bad: The Nano’s camera can’t shoot photos or HD-quality video and Apple located its lens in the most awkward location imaginable. Storage capacities remain stuck at 8GB and 16GB.
The bottom line: No other MP3 player on the planet packs more features, from video to a pedometer, into a smaller package than the overachieving Apple iPod Nano.
